The first record of Reflexology was found in an Egyptian physicians’ tomb. Researchers believe that the art dates back to 2330 BC and is well over 5,500 years old. Today’s methods of reflexology are based on the work of Dr. William Fitzgerald who pioneered Zone Therapy in the USA.
The Zone theory explains the relationship between the organs and glands of the body to the hands and/or feet. The body is divided into ten zones which run in longitudinal lines from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. The right foot and right hand correspond to the organs situated on the right side of the body, such as the right eye, right shoulder, right kidney, etc. The bottom of the feet and palms of the hands are comprised of a horizontal division that can be considered a mirror image of the entire body. This system allows the reflexologist to target a specific area of physical discomfort of the body by stimulating one area of the corresponding foot or hand.
How can Reflexology Help You?
The body has the ability to heal itself, but following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of imbalance and vital energy pathways become blocked preventing the body from functioning effectively. When one part of the body is not functioning well, the effect is felt throughout the entire system. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural balance and encourage healing.
For each individual, the application and the effect of the therapy are unique. The sensitive, skilled hands of the Reflexologist can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet, and by working on these points can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the entire body. Tensions are eased and circulation and elimination are improved. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.
Is a special diet required for reflexology to work?
Although a special diet is not necessary to acquire the benefits of reflexology, it is highly recommended to carefully consider the intake of healthy foods. As many holistic nutritionists would agree, you will find it very beneficial to consume as many whole foods as possible. Keep in mind that processed foods are one of the biggest sources of toxin build-up in our systems – namely, the very toxins that reflexology strives to rid the body of. Outside of a whole foods diet, the basics of a good diet always apply. Make sure to drink plenty of water, cut down, or better yet, eliminate caffeine. Along with a well-balanced diet, make sure to exercise regularly and get adequate rest – Reflexology will take care of the stress!
What Happens in a Reflexology Session?
The client relaxes in a comfortable position while the Reflexologist works on either the hands, feet, or ears. Beginning with the right side, all reflex points on both sides are stimulated as the body is considered to be a whole unit.
Reflexology is safe for everyone, although pressure and length of session may vary for babies, the aged or the extremely ill.
How to choose a Reflexologist:
Make sure to enlist the services of a Professional Reflexologist who is a member of the Reflexology Association of Canada. Professional Reflexologists have attained high standards of training, follow standards of practice and carry liability insurance.
What is a Foot Detox and its benefits?
By introducing a high level of negative ions into the water of a foot bath and utilizing the science of ionization and osmosis, the foot detox is designed to help balance the body’s pH level. It stimulates heavy metal removal from the body. Some studies have shown in just one 30-minute treatment a person’s pH balance can be restored from an acidic 6 to an alkaline 7.5.
Why pH Balance is critical for good health.
Potential Hydrogen (pH) is the standard scientific measure for levels of acidity in organic material. In human health and medicine, the pH of our body fluids is a key indicator of our general state of health. The pH range is from 0-14 with 7 being neutral. Any measure of 7 or higher is alkaline. Anything below 7 is acidic. A healthy body has a pH balance of 7.35-7.5.
Acidic pH balances decrease your body’s ability to absorb vitamins, minerals, food supplements and other nutrients and decreases cellular energy production. Illness appears to thrive in an acidic environment, often causing a person to become acidic from an acid-rich diet, from toxic overload, and from stress and immune reactions.
A foot soak of any kind is recommended with a reflexology treatment, with moor or even better with a foot detox.
One treatment alone is a step in the right direction, but naturally, a regular series of treatments is recommended. For the best results, make sure to book for the recommended series to help get your body back on track.
